This is a sharing of a 21st century Kampung Story…

Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) is a non-profit organisation in Singapore, founded by Mr Tay Lai Hock in 2008. With a vision to nurture a future generation of resilient people and grounded leaders, GUI is currently in the process of building a community campus,*Kampung Kampus, amidst a high-density public housing neighbourhood in Yishun, Singapore.

It is hoped that Kampung Kampus will be an exemplar of best practices in urban sustainability, achieving zero carbon footprint with innovative and energy efficient technologies. While architecture is the Hardware, GUI believes that it is through the Software and most importantly the Heartware that a committed community can inspire a systemic change across the stratas of our society to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

Over the years, many volunteers and people from all walks of life had contributed to the growth of GUI. From farming, wood-working, ground-up innovations and many other hands-on activities, a “21st century Kampung Culture” is slowly forming, guided by the philosophy that a more sustainable and happier society needs more people who are more 5Gs: Gracious, Green, Giving, Grounded and Grateful!
